How it's calculated

The math behind the conversion

Megapixels only tell you total pixel count — the aspect ratio decides how those pixels are split between width and height. Here's the exact formula the calculator above runs.

STEP 01

Total pixels

Total px = MP × 1,000,000

One megapixel equals one million pixels. A 12 MP sensor captures roughly 12,000,000 individual pixels per photo.

STEP 02

Width

Width = √(ratio × total px)

The aspect ratio (width ÷ height) determines how the total pixel count is distributed horizontally.

STEP 03

Height

Height = √(total px ÷ ratio)

Dividing instead of multiplying by the ratio gives the vertical pixel count that completes the frame.

Not necessarily. Resolution sets the pixel count, but sharpness also depends on sensor size, pixel size, lens quality, and image processing. A 50 MP sensor with tiny pixels can look softer than a well-tuned 12 MP sensor with larger pixels.

Because the aspect ratio changes how the same total pixel count is arranged. A 12 MP photo at 4:3 is squarer than a 12 MP photo at 16:9, which stretches the same pixels into a wider, shorter frame.
